Arsenal football Club have announced that three first-team players have agreed new contracts to remain at the club beyond the end of season. There was an unconfirmed report on Tuesday that some players have agreed to a new deal with the capital club with announcement imminent.
The club has taken to the official website to confirm that David Luiz, Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari have agreed to extend their deals beyond this summer.
The club’s technical director Edu stated that he was very happy to announce that the defensive trio will be staying with the club beyond the current season. Je admitted that Luiz is very important to the club. While he acknowledged the unfortunate injury to Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares, he believes the duo are quality players and the club fans will get to see the best of the two stars when they return to full action.
While Arsenal have not been specified with the terms of each player’s contract, it was reported on Tuesday that Luiz would sign a new one-year deal. Meanwhile, January loan arrivals Mari and Cedric, the latter of whom is yet to make a first-team appearance for the club, have both been given four-year contracts.
The idea of handing a new deal to Luiz, in particular, has been an unpopular notion among many Arsenal fans, with the 33-year-old’s disastrous 25-minute cameo performance in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City providing enough evidence for the argument that he is no longer good enough for top-level football. The former Blues defender has been error prone since he joined the Gunners and the decision to hand him an extension amid his latest showing will be very unpopular among the Arsenal faithfuls.
