ARSENAL STRUGGLE
Arsenal managed to sustain their position at the top of the table following a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, who are struggling near the bottom of the table. Mikel Arteta scored the opening goal for the club, but he was later sent off. Arsenal had to play the last few minutes with only 10 men on the pitch. There were some good performances from Arsenal. Arsene Wenger praised goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who made some crucial saves in order to keep the club in the game. It was not the usual fluid performance from Arsenal.
Despite possessing the likes of Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud, they were unable to translate their superiority in terms of squad strength onto the pitch. This victory was essential for Arsenal considering that they had lost 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the midweek match in the Champions league. A victory was also essential because they will be facing a run of difficult fixtures over the next few weeks. Wenger’s team will take on the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Dortmund.
This stern test could easily break Arsenal’s season like it has done in the past on numerous occasions. Arsenal are clearly a confidence team and they needed a win from this match in order to approach the next few weeks in the best possible manner.
“It was not a game of brilliance but efficiency and patience. Maybe were not at our sharpest but we were serious and determined. After the disappointment of Tuesday night, it was important to respond with a win straight away. We dealt well with the situation. We were mature, organised and didn`t become nervous. Szczesny made two great saves at an important moment of the game and eventually we got the second goal,” said Wenger after winning against managerless Crystal Palace.

CESC BID?
Manchester United have been showing great interest in Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas over the last month. They have already had two bids rejected for the player, while they are reported to be preparing a third bid in the region of £ 40 million for the 26-year-old. Arsenal are thought to have inserted a ‘first refusal’ clause in his deal that saw him move to the camp Nou in 2011. Barcelona paid close to £ 35 million for the Spaniard, and it is thought that they are looking at around £ 45 million as his valuation.
Arsene Wenger, though, looks highly unlikely to utilise the ‘first refusal’ clause has Arsenal appear to be intent on signing a striker rather than a midfielder. Over the last few months, Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Higuain, Wayne Rooney, and Luis Suarez. Wenger has said that he does not think Fabregas will quit his Barcelona dream after just two years. Even though Fabregas played in most of the matches for Barcelona last season, he was not happy at the way he was utilised by the club. Fabregas was played in a number of positions, while he was also continuously substituted as well.
He is prepared to see how it goes under new manager Gerardo Martino.
“What I know is that Fabregas will stay on more year, at least, in Barcelona. That’s the information I have. If that changes, I don’t know. But that’s what I’ve been told,” said Wenger. “He has a contract with us. We count on Cesc. I said that on the day of the presentation of Tito (Vilanova) and also with Tata (new coach Gerardo Martino). He’s an extraordinary player who creates and finishes chances. We are delighted with him. He’s the number four of Barca,” said Barcelona’s sporting director.

YOUNGSTERS SNAPPED UP
Over the years, Arsenal have missed out on several exceptional players like Didier Drogba. However, manager Arsene Wenger can point to the huge number of stars that he has unearthed from almost nothing. The likes of Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song, and Thierry Henry became well-established stars after arriving at Arsenal. Wenger can now add the name of Gareth Bale to the players he has missed the over the years. Arsenal were in contention with several clubs across the Premier league for the signature of Gareth Bale when he was at Southampton.
Arsenal could have secured his signing due to the good relationship with Southampton following the transfer of Theo Walcott for close to £ 12 million. In the end, it was Tottenham who managed to secure the signing of Bale for around £ 5 million. This now seems as a bargain because the player is valued at in excess of £ 50 million after managing to win both the PFA player of the year awards on offer last season. The 23-year-old is now wanted by some of the biggest clubs in the world including Real Madrid. Wenger has finally admitted that he may have made a mistake in the evaluation of Bale.
Bale is widely regarded to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring more than 20 goals last season despite being a winger.
“We didn’t take him as we had Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy and didn’t want another left-back. I must confess it was a huge mistake as he can play in midfield. He struggled at the start at Tottenham, then they moved him to midfield and he has done exceptionally well. The career of a player sometimes depends on playing in the right position. He has the potential. Now it depends on his consistency at the top level and injuries,” said Wenger.
